About Us

At the public meeting on 2nd December 2006, which was attended by approximately 150 people, it was agreed that action should be taken... "to do whatever it takes to save the village of Walberswick and as much of its surroundings as possible."

As a result of that meeting, the Walberswick Sea Defence Group has been set up which comprises the current Parish Council and members of the Common Lands Charity Trust.

The objective of this group is to formulate a long term sustainable solution to the problem of sea defence, with the strongly preferred option being to maintain the shingle ridge thereby preserving the village, the marshes and the beach for future generations.

The strategy of the group is fourfold, namely:

  • To continue to engage with the Environment Agency and other interested parties to ensure that the shingle ridge is maintained.

  • To undertake a cost-benefit analysis to demonstrate the negative impact on land and properties and other wider economic, social and cultural factors.

  • The Environment Agency has said it will not continue to maintain the Walberswick to Dunwich shingle bank in the long term. This means that if we are fully to protect the village and its surroundings, we may have to take action as a community. To do this we propose to raise a fighting fund.

  • In order to be prepared for the situation in which a breach has occurred, and the Environment Agency is not willing to repair it, the WSDG will develop an emergency action plan. This plan will cover physical works, legal implications, funding and communications.
